Surroundääni, also known as surround sound, is an audio technology designed to recreate the experience of sound occurring from all directions around a listener. This creates a more immersive and realistic listening environment compared to traditional stereo sound, which typically outputs audio from two channels (left and right).

The fundamental principle of surround sound involves reproducing audio from multiple discrete channels, strategically placed around the audience. The most common configurations involve speakers positioned in front of, to the sides of, and behind the listener. These channels can carry different audio signals, allowing sound effects, dialogue, and music to be placed and moved within the sound field.

Early forms of surround sound emerged in the mid-20th century, with advancements in the late 20th and early 21st centuries leading to more sophisticated and widely adopted systems. Popular surround sound formats include Dolby Digital, DTS (Digital Theater Systems), and their various iterations. These systems often encode audio information in a way that allows for flexible channel configurations, ranging from basic 5.1 systems (three front channels, two surround channels, and a subwoofer for low-frequency effects) to more complex setups with additional height channels for overhead sound.

Surround sound is commonly found in home theater systems, movie theaters, and increasingly in video games and music production. Its aim is to enhance the sense of space and envelopment, making for a more engaging and impactful auditory experience. By accurately reproducing the directionality and distance of sounds, surround sound aims to transport the listener directly into the action or performance.
