Surnametoponym, more commonly called a toponymic surname, is a surname derived from a place name or geographic feature. It identifies a person as originating from, or residing near, a specific location. This makes it one of the major categories of surname etiology, alongside patronymic, occupational, and nickname-based names.

Origin and formation: Toponymic surnames arise when a community or individual is identified by the locale associated with them—towns, villages, rivers, hills, or other landscape features. They may indicate origin (for example, from the town of London) or residence near a notable landmark. Over time, these place-based identifiers become hereditary.

Linguistic patterns and examples: In English, toponymic names often derive from place names or geographic terms, sometimes with suffixes such as -ton, -ham, -by, -wood, or simply the placename used as a surname (London, Newton, Hill, Ford, Walden). In Germanic and Romance languages, equivalents appear with prepositional elements such as von, van, de, or di (for example, von Braun, van Dyke, de Villar).
