Surfacetoorbit

Surface-to-orbit (S2O) is a term used to describe mission profiles and vehicle designs that reach space directly from a planetary surface, without requiring staged propulsion in space or suborbital hops followed by orbital maneuvers. S2O missions can be crewed or uncrewed and depend on delivering payloads into a stable orbit by overcoming atmospheric drag, gravity losses, and steering losses during ascent. The concept encompasses a range of architectures, from traditional multi-stage expendable rockets to newer, partially reusable systems.

A key factor in S2O design is the delta-v budget required to reach orbit. For Earth, achieving low Earth orbit typically requires about 9.3–10.0 km/s of total delta-v when losses due to gravity and aerodynamic drag are included, with the remaining portion providing the orbital velocity. This budget influences choices about propulsion, thrust-to-weight at liftoff, staging strategies, and ascent trajectory. Multi-stage configurations are common, allowing stage mass to be jettisoned as propellant is exhausted, thereby sustaining higher effective exhaust velocity and thrust.

Two major design categories are SSTO (single-stage-to-orbit), which remains largely theoretical for practical Earth launch, and traditional multiplet-stage systems with booster elements and separate upper stages. Reusability, reliability, manufacturing cost, and operational safety are ongoing considerations that shape S2O practice. Modern programs often pursue partial reusability to reduce lifetime launch costs while maintaining performance.
