Supraesophagealganglion

The supraesophageal ganglion, also called the protocerebrum, is the upper central part of the insect nervous system located above the esophagus. It is situated between the brain and the thoracic ganglia and is connected to the rest of the central nervous system by the subesophageal ganglion, a nerve cord segment that lies beneath the esophagus.

In insects, the supraesophageal ganglion houses the neural circuitry responsible for processing visual, auditory, and olfactory information that reaches the brain through optic and antennal lobe inputs. Its organization reflects the major divisions of the insect brain: the protocerebrum, deutocerebrum, and tritocerebrum, each handling different modalities of sensory information. The protocerebrum hosts mushroom bodies, which are involved in learning and memory, and central complex structures that coordinate locomotor patterns and spatial orientation.

Functionally, the supraesophageal ganglion integrates multimodal sensory signals and generates motor commands transmitted to the thoracic ganglia, thereby shaping behavior. It plays a key role in reflexive and learned responses, such as escape jumps, courtship displays, and navigation. Comparative neuroanatomy shows that the size and complexity of the supraesophageal ganglion correlate with an insect’s behavioral repertoire and ecological specialization.
