Suppuratiivinen

Suppuratiivinen is a Finnish medical adjective describing processes or lesions that produce suppuration, i.e., pus. The term comes from Latin suppurare, meaning to form pus. In clinical use it characterizes inflammatory reactions in which pus accumulates and is often associated with infection.

Suppurative inflammation involves neutrophil-dominated infiltration and tissue breakdown leading to purulent exudate. Pus consists of dead neutrophils, bacteria, and tissue debris and can accumulate to form abscesses. The condition is typically caused by bacterial pathogens and is distinct from non-purulent inflammation such as serous or fibrinous inflammation.

Common contexts include skin and soft tissue infections (abscesses, boils), wound infections, and purulent forms of otitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, or meningitis. Suppurative arthritis or osteomyelitis describe joint or bone infections with pus formation. In medical records the term helps differentiate purulent from non-purulent inflammatory processes.

Diagnosis combines clinical signs of infection with laboratory tests, imaging, and, when appropriate, drainage or aspiration of purulent material for culture. Treatment focuses on source control (drainage of abscesses) and antimicrobial therapy guided by suspected or identified pathogens and local resistance patterns.
