Supperas

Supperas is a historic coastal city-state and port in the eastern Marelia archipelago. It rose as a commercial hub linking inland kingdoms with distant markets across the sea. The etymology is uncertain; some scholars trace it to a local term for harbor, others to a royal title.

Geography: Situated on the central island of Nereos, Supperas features a natural harbor ringed by terraced quays. The terrain includes limestone cliffs, mangrove bays, and a dry-to-subhumid climate. The city is organized around a grid of stone and wood streets.

History: Founded in the early medieval period by seafaring clans, Supperas expanded through maritime trade and literacy networks. It minted coins, built the Great Dock, and hosted merchants from the north and east. In the late medieval era it faced periodic earthquakes and shifting trade routes, but remained a regional center.

Culture and society: Supperans speak a local Marelic language with distinct dialects. The city has long celebrated sea-related shrines and a secular tradition of guilds. Arts include shipbuilding, wood inlay, and ceramic painting. Dishes combine fish, citrus, grains, and olive oil. The annual Harbor Lights festival marks the opening of the trading season.

Economy and today: The modern economy centers on port services, fisheries, light manufacturing, and heritage tourism. Supperas remains notable for its intact waterfront and colonnaded markets. The city is governed by a council of merchants and elders, with ceremonial roles drawn from historic households. Population is around 40,000.
