These events can include the end stages of stellar evolution for massive stars, the accretion of matter onto white dwarf stars in binary systems, or potentially the collapse of exotic stellar remnants. The core concept revolves around the immense energy release when a star exhausts its nuclear fuel or experiences a catastrophic instability.

In the case of core-collapse supernovae, massive stars exceeding a certain mass threshold undergo gravitational collapse when their core can no longer support itself through nuclear fusion. This collapse leads to a rebound and a subsequent explosion that expels the star's outer layers into space, creating a supernova. The remnant of such an event is typically a neutron star or a black hole.

Another significant type of supernova, known as a Type Ia supernova, originates from white dwarf stars. These are the dense remnants of Sun-like stars. If a white dwarf is in a binary system and accretes enough mass from its companion star, it can exceed the Chandrasekhar limit, leading to runaway nuclear fusion and a thermonuclear explosion that completely destroys the white dwarf.
