Supermarketu is a large-scale, self-service retail format that sells a broad range of groceries and household goods. Typically laid out in multiple departments, supermarketu emphasizes one-stop shopping with a wide assortment, competitive prices, and flexible checkout options. The term is used in several languages to denote this retail format and can refer to both independent stores and those that are part of larger chains.

Modern supermarketu emerged in the early 20th century as mass merchandising and self-serve layouts replaced traditional grocers. The prototype matured in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, with chains expanding nationwide in the postwar era. The format spread globally as urbanization and consumer demand for convenience grew, and it was later complemented by larger formats such as hypermarkets and warehouse clubs.

Most supermarketu operate through centralized procurement, private-label products, promotions, loyalty programs, and efficient supply chains. They stock produce, meat and seafood, dairy, bakery, frozen foods, canned goods, beverages, and nonfood items. In-store services may include delis, bakeries, pharmacies, or banks, depending on the market. Layout emphasizes product visibility, with seasonal displays and end caps for promotions. Payment options include cash, cards, and increasingly mobile wallets.

Supermarketu contribute to urban and regional food retailing by offering convenience, consistent pricing, and extensive selection, while also increasing competition for smaller retailers. Challenges include labor practices, waste, and reliance on long supply chains.
