Superiority theory is a concept in humor that suggests people find something funny when they perceive themselves as superior to the subject of the joke. This perceived superiority can stem from various sources, including intelligence, social status, physical ability, or moral standing. When an individual witnesses another person or group making a mistake, exhibiting a flaw, or experiencing misfortune, and they believe themselves to be better in some way, a sense of amusement can arise.

This theory posits that humor acts as a mechanism for social comparison and reinforcement of self-esteem. By laughing at the perceived failings of others, individuals can momentarily elevate their own sense of self-worth. Examples often cited include slapstick comedy, where the physical mishaps of characters can be seen as funny because the observer feels more coordinated or less clumsy. Similarly, jokes that mock certain professions or social groups may tap into the audience's feeling of being more knowledgeable or sophisticated than those being ridiculed.

However, superiority theory is not universally accepted as the sole explanation for humor, and its application can be complex. Critics point out that many forms of humor do not rely on a clear sense of superiority, such as observational humor or puns. Additionally, the enjoyment derived from humor is subjective, and what one person finds amusing based on a feeling of superiority, another might find offensive or simply not funny. Therefore, while superiority theory offers a lens through which to understand certain comedic phenomena, it is generally considered one of several contributing factors to why people laugh.
