A supervillain is a fictional antagonist, usually in superhero or action genres, who possesses extraordinary abilities, resources, or influence and pursues large-scale aims that threaten society. They typically appear as recurring adversaries to a hero or team, presenting escalating challenges through complex schemes, advanced technology, or powerful magical forces.

Motivations vary; power, control, revenge, ideology, or personal grievance are common. Some are purely malicious, while others are driven by a principled but extreme worldview, leading to morally gray portrayals. Characters may have detailed backstories and adopt a persona that highlights their sense of superiority or ideology. Their methods range from manipulation and political corruption to threats of mass destruction.

In narrative function, the supervillain serves to test the hero's limits, often embodying the antithesis of the hero's values. They may be masterminds who orchestrate plans from behind the scenes or visible tyrants who impose direct rule. Tropes include the arch-nemesis, the mad scientist, the dictator, the criminal mastermind, or the corrupt public official. Modern depictions often add moral complexity or ambiguity to their motives.

Across media, the concept appears in comic books, films, television, and games, with crossovers and shared universes. Notable examples include Lex Luthor, Joker, Doctor Doom, Thanos, and Magneto. The term and concept continue to evolve as audiences expect multifaceted villains who challenge heroes beyond simple good-versus-evil contrasts.
