It refers to the conventional rules that govern the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. This principle is fundamental in arithmetic and algebra to avoid confusion and errors.

The most commonly accepted order of operations is often remembered by acronyms such as PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction) or BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction). These acronyms provide a mnemonic device to recall the hierarchy of operations.

Typically, operations within parentheses or brackets are performed first. Following this, exponents or orders are evaluated. Next, multiplication and division are carried out from left to right. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed from left to right. Adhering to this established order ensures that regardless of who is performing the calculation, the outcome will be the same. For example, in the expression 2 + 3 * 4, multiplication takes precedence over addition, so the correct calculation is 2 + 12 = 14, not (2 + 3) * 4 = 20.
