Suoravantaus

Suoravantaus is a Finnish term that translates to "straight sleigh" or "direct pull" and refers to a traditional method of harnessing a horse for pulling a sleigh. In this system, the horse is positioned directly in front of the sleigh, and the pulling force is applied through a single central shaft or tongue. This differs from other harnessing methods where the horse might be positioned alongside the sleigh or attached via a wider yoke.

The suoravantaus method is characterized by its simplicity and efficiency for certain types of sleighs and terrain. It allows for a direct transfer of the horse's power to the sleigh, making it effective for moving heavy loads over snow or ice. The design often involves a breast collar or a similar harness that distributes the pulling force across the horse's chest and shoulders. The central shaft of the sleigh is typically attached to this harness, ensuring a straight pull.
