Suolistooireet

Suolistooireet is Finnish for intestinal symptoms. The term covers a range of symptoms related to the digestive tract and is not a disease itself. It describes experiences that may arise from functional disorders as well as identifiable organic conditions, from common infections to chronic diseases.

Typical symptoms include abdominal pain or cramps, bloating, gas, altered bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation), nausea, vomiting, heartburn, loss of appetite, and sometimes blood in stool or weight loss. Fever and dehydration may indicate more serious problems.

Causes are diverse. Functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional dyspepsia produce symptoms without an obvious structural disease. Organic causes include infections (viral, bacterial, parasitic), inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, lactose intolerance, ulcers, obstructions, and adverse drug effects.

Evaluation combines history, exam, and selective testing: stool tests, blood tests, inflammatory markers, imaging (ultrasound or CT), and endoscopic procedures when indicated. Older adults and those with alarm features require prompt assessment.

Management depends on the cause. General measures include hydration, balanced nutrition, and gradual dietary adjustments; fiber changes; and targeted therapies such as antispasmodics, laxatives, anti-diarrheals, and acid-suppressants. Chronic conditions like IBD or celiac disease require specific therapies and specialist care.

Outlook ranges from self-limiting infections to chronic disorders managed over time. Prevention emphasizes hygiene to reduce infections, safe food practice, and early medical evaluation for persistent or alarming symptoms.
