Suojavaippa

A suojavaippa is a waterproof outer diaper cover used over a diaper to prevent leaks. The term is Finnish and translates roughly as "protective diaper." In cloth diapering, it serves as a protective barrier that keeps clothing dry while the absorbent diaper handles moisture.

Most suojavaipat are made from waterproof laminated fabrics such as polyurethane laminate (PUL) or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), sometimes with a soft inner lining. They have elasticized leg openings and a snug waist, and closures are usually snaps or hook-and-loop (Velcro) fasteners. Some designs are one-size-fits-most with adjustable rise via rows of snaps.

Usage: Used with cloth diapers, suojavaipat come in wrap-style covers that fasten around the diaper and pull-on pant-style covers that resemble underwear. Wrap styles tend to offer better containment and easier adjustability, while pull-on styles are quicker to change.

Care: They are not absorbent; wash with other diapering textiles, avoid fabric softeners and chlorine bleach, and dry per manufacturer instructions (line-dry or low heat). With regular use, the waterproof layer may wear out and require replacement.
