This process extracts the soluble compounds from the coffee, resulting in a beverage that is generally lighter in body and less intense than espresso-based drinks. The filter, typically made of paper, metal, or cloth, separates the coffee grounds from the brewed liquid, preventing sediment from entering the final cup.

The popularity of suodatinkahvia is attributed to its simplicity and accessibility. Home coffee makers that employ this method are widespread, requiring only ground coffee and water. The grind size of the coffee beans is crucial for optimal extraction; too fine a grind can lead to over-extraction and bitterness, while too coarse a grind can result in under-extraction and a weak, sour coffee.

Variations in suodatinkahvia include the type of coffee bean used, the roast level, and the specific brewing equipment. Different filter materials can also subtly influence the taste profile.
