Sundiver

Sundiver is a science fiction novel by David Brin, first published in 1980 by Bantam Books. It is the earliest published work set in Brin’s larger Uplift Universe, a shared fictional setting in which intelligent species are uplifted by more advanced patrons.

The story centers on a solar-dive mission within the Solar System. The crew embarks on a dangerous exploration of the Sun’s exterior and interior regions, seeking to uncover phenomena that could illuminate humanity’s place in the galaxy. During the course of the mission, humans encounter evidence of the Dwellers, an ancient alien civilization living in the Sun itself. The encounter becomes a catalyst for political and social tension among human factions, raising questions about the responsibilities and consequences of contact with a vastly older and more powerful species.

Sundiver blends hard science details with speculative elements about alien cognition and the ethics of contact.
