Sundhedsvæsnet

Sundhedsvæsnet refers to the Danish healthcare system. It is a publicly funded and managed system that provides a wide range of medical services to all residents of Denmark. The system is largely tax-funded, with a smaller contribution from patient co-payments for certain services and medications.

The primary responsibility for organizing and delivering healthcare lies with the regions (regioner). There are five regions in Denmark, each managing its own hospitals and specialist healthcare services. Municipalities (kommuner) are responsible for primary healthcare, including home care, nursing homes, and rehabilitation services. General practitioners (praktiserende læger) act as the first point of contact for most patients, referring them to specialists or hospitals when necessary.

The Danish healthcare system emphasizes universal access, equality, and a high standard of care. It covers everything from preventive measures and general medical consultations to complex surgical procedures and long-term care. While the system is generally well-regarded for its quality and accessibility, like many healthcare systems worldwide, it faces ongoing challenges related to funding, aging populations, and demand for services. Patients have the right to choose their general practitioner and, in some cases, their hospital. The system also includes a private healthcare sector, though it plays a supplementary role to the public system.
