Sulkeilet refers to a traditional Finnish practice of closing or shutting down certain public services, businesses, or institutions for a limited period, typically during the winter months. The term originates from the Finnish word *sulkea*, meaning "to close," and *lehti*, which can refer to a leaf or, in this context, a seasonal change. This practice is most commonly associated with rural communities and smaller towns, where resources and populations are smaller, and maintaining full operations year-round can be challenging.

The primary reason for sulkeilet is to address the logistical and financial difficulties posed by the harsh Finnish winters. Reduced daylight, heavy snowfall, and extremely cold temperatures can disrupt transportation, limit accessibility, and increase operational costs. By temporarily closing services such as schools, shops, or public facilities, communities can conserve resources, reduce maintenance burdens, and ensure the safety of residents and staff. Sulkeilet periods often coincide with the darkest and coldest months, typically from late November through February.
