Sulfoxideryhmä, also known as a sulfoxide group, is a functional group in organic chemistry characterized by a sulfur atom bonded to an oxygen atom and two carbon atoms. The general formula for a sulfoxide is R2S=O, where R represents alkyl or aryl groups. The sulfur atom in a sulfoxide is in a formal oxidation state of +2. The S=O bond is polar due to the significant electronegativity difference between sulfur and oxygen, leading to a partial positive charge on the sulfur atom and a partial negative charge on the oxygen atom. This polarity influences the reactivity and physical properties of sulfoxide compounds.

Sulfoxides can be synthesized through the oxidation of sulfides. Mild oxidizing agents, such as hydrogen peroxide or peracids, are commonly used for this transformation. The reaction typically proceeds without affecting other functional groups present in the molecule. Chiral sulfoxides, where the sulfur atom is bonded to two different organic groups, can exhibit optical activity and are important in asymmetric synthesis.

Sulfoxides play a role in various biological processes and are found in some natural products. For instance, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a widely used polar aprotic solvent and has applications in medicine as a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. Other sulfoxides, like alliin from garlic, are precursors to bioactive compounds. The sulfoxide functionality can also be involved in chemical reactions, such as Pummerer rearrangements or serving as leaving groups in certain transformations.
