Sujuisivat

Sujuisivat is the third-person plural conditional form of the Finnish verb sujua. The verb sujua means to go smoothly, to proceed well, or to work out as planned; it can describe the progress of an event, project, or process and, in some contexts, fluency in speech or action. The form sujuisivat expresses a hypothetical situation involving more than one subject.

Formation and usage notes. Sujua is an intransitive verb with forms such as sujuu in the present and sujui in the past. In the conditional mood, the third-person plural form is sujuisivat, used to talk about how things would proceed if certain conditions were met. This mood is common in subordinate clauses introduced by jos (if) or in statements that express hypothetical or polite possibilities. The form agrees with a plural subject and is typically found in more formal or written Finnish, but it can appear in spoken language as well.

Examples. Jos asiat sujuisivat paremmin, voisimme aloittaa projektin. In this sentence, the speaker imagines a scenario in which things go more smoothly, allowing action to proceed.

Etymology and related forms. The root suju- comes from sujua, and related forms include the adjective sujuva (smooth, fluent) and the noun sujuvuus (smoothness, fluency). Sujua is often used to describe processes that progress without major problems, while sujuvuus focuses on the quality of that progress.
