Suikerbietenteelt refers to the cultivation of sugar beet plants. Sugar beets are biennial herbaceous plants belonging to the family Amaranthaceae, primarily grown for their high sugar content, which is extracted to produce table sugar. The plant is characterized by a large, fleshy taproot that stores sucrose.

The cultivation of sugar beets is a significant agricultural practice in many temperate regions, particularly in Europe and parts of North America. It requires fertile, well-drained soil and a climate with sufficient sunlight and rainfall during the growing season. The planting season typically begins in early spring, with seeds sown directly into the ground. Farmers employ various techniques to optimize growth, including crop rotation, fertilization, and irrigation. Weed control is also crucial, often achieved through herbicides or mechanical methods.

Sugar beet harvesting usually takes place in the autumn, once the roots have reached optimal size and sugar concentration. The harvested beets are then transported to processing factories where the sugar is extracted. This involves washing, slicing the beets into cossettes, and then diffusing the sugar into water. The resulting sugar juice undergoes purification and crystallization processes to yield refined sugar.

The sugar beet industry plays an important role in rural economies, providing employment and contributing to agricultural output. Beyond sugar production, by-products from sugar beet processing, such as molasses and pulp, are utilized in animal feed and for the production of ethanol and other industrial products.
