Sugárzásból (from the Hungarian term for "radiation") refers to the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles. In Hungarian scientific and technical contexts, the term is often used to describe various forms of radiation, including ionizing and non-ionizing types, and their effects on matter and living organisms.

Radiation can originate from natural sources, such as cosmic rays, radioactive decay in the Earth's crust, or the Sun, as well as from human-made sources like medical imaging devices, nuclear power plants, and industrial applications. Ionizing radiation, which carries sufficient energy to detach electrons from atoms or molecules, includes gamma rays, X-rays, and certain types of particle radiation. This type of radiation can cause biological damage, including DNA mutations, and is regulated due to its potential hazards.

Non-ionizing radiation, such as radio waves, microwaves, visible light, ultraviolet (UV) light, and infrared radiation, lacks the energy to ionize atoms but can still interact with biological tissues. Prolonged exposure to high levels of non-ionizing radiation, particularly UV radiation, may lead to skin damage or other health effects.

In Hungary, radiation safety is governed by national and international regulations to minimize risks to public health and the environment. Organizations such as the National Atomic Energy Authority (Állami Atomenergetikai Hivatal, ÁAEH) oversee radiation protection, ensuring compliance with safety standards in industries like healthcare, energy, and research. Public awareness campaigns also emphasize safe practices to reduce unnecessary exposure.

Understanding radiation involves studying its properties, sources, and effects, as well as implementing proper safeguards to protect individuals and ecosystems. Advances in technology continue to improve detection, monitoring, and mitigation methods, contributing to safer applications in medicine, energy, and beyond.
