Sugárhatásokat, or radiation effects, refer to the physical, chemical, biological, and environmental consequences that result from interactions between ionising or non‑ionising radiation and matter. The effects are typically classified along several lines, including the type of radiation, its wavelength and energy, and the medium exposed.

Ionising radiation, such as alpha, beta, gamma rays and X‑rays, carries sufficient energy to detach electrons from atoms. This ionisation process can break chemical bonds, create free radicals, and damage DNA. Biological consequences include acute radiation sickness, mutations, and increased cancer risk. In addition, ionising radiation can alter material properties, resulting in embrittlement, swelling, or changes in electrical conductivity, which is a concern for nuclear reactor components and spacecraft shielding.

Non‑ionising radiation covers electromagnetic waves from infrared to ultraviolet, microwaves, and visible light. Ultraviolet radiation can cause direct DNA damage and skin cancers. Infrared radiation leads to heating effects, while microwave exposure at high intensities can cause thermal injury to tissues and has been implicated in increased risks of certain cancers. Radiofrequency exposure affects the human body primarily through heating and, at very high levels, potential non‑thermal biological effects are still under investigation.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from power lines, radio transmitters, and electronic devices are a form of non‑ionising radiation that may influence biological systems through electromagnetic induction and non‑thermal pathways. Epidemiological studies have produced mixed results, prompting ongoing research and refined exposure guidelines.

In environmental contexts, radiation from natural background sources, such as radon gas, cosmic rays, and terrestrial radioisotopes, contributes to a baseline dose that organisms must tolerate. Human activities—nuclear power generation, medical imaging, and industrial radiography—add to the cumulative exposure of populations. International bodies like the International Commission on Radiological Protection set dose limits and safety standards to mitigate adverse effects while enabling the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and research.
