Succeedare

Succeedare is a Latin verb meaning “to succeed” or “to follow after” in a legal, administrative, or familial context. The root of the term is the combination of s + uccedere, where s is an emphatic particle and uccedere means “to go out” or “to exit.” As such, it is used to describe the act of inheriting rights, titles, or duties upon the death or resignation of a predecessor.

In Roman law, succeeding could occur through various forms of succession (hereditas), such as testamentary succession, where a will sets out the order of heirs, or through primogeniture, where the eldest son inherits the estate. The term is also applied in ecclesiastical contexts to describe the appointment of a bishop or pope to replace a deceased or resigned incumbent.
