Subprefecture

Subprefecture is a term used in several countries to denote an administrative division below a higher-level authority such as a prefecture or municipality. The precise status and powers vary, but subprefectures generally function as an intermediate layer intended to facilitate governance and service delivery to a local area.

In France, sous-préfecture refers to the administrative center of an arrondissement that does not contain the department's prefecture. The arrondissement is led by a sous-préfet who represents the state at the local level, coordinating national services (police, education, transport) and implementing national policy in the area, in collaboration with elected representatives. Not all arrondissements have a sous-préfecture; those containing the department seat are governed directly from the prefecture.

In Brazil, subprefeitura denotes a subdivision of a large municipality. Each has a subprefeito as executive head and is responsible for coordinating municipal services for a group of districts, within the framework of the city government. Subprefeituras handle local matters such as urban planning, sanitation, maintenance of public spaces, and social programs.

In Japan and other countries, the term is used in varying ways to describe regional offices or subdivisions that help administer a larger prefecture or municipality. The functions typically focus on implementing government programs, coordinating services, and representing higher authorities at the local level.
