These environments may include subordinate clauses after expressions of necessity, desire, doubt, or command; in formal or careful speech; or in certain dialects and registers. The concept is often studied with corpus data or production experiments, where researchers estimate the subjunctive-to-indicative ratio across contexts and speaker groups.

Subjunctiveleaning interacts with cross-linguistic variation in mood systems.
