Subjenis

Subjenis is an Indonesian term meaning "subtype" or "subclass." It denotes a lower-level category within a broader kind, usually with distinct, recognizable traits. The term is used across disciplines to indicate a finer level of classification beyond a general category.

In biology, subjenis often corresponds to subspecies, the population-level division within a species that shows heritable differences and geographic separation. Examples include Panthera tigris tigris (Bengal tiger) and Panthera tigris altaica (Siberian tiger). Not all species have recognized subspecies, and taxonomic practice varies.

In medicine and epidemiology, subjenis refers to disease or pathogen subtypes that reflect biology, prognosis, or treatment response. For example, breast cancer subtypes such as luminal A, luminal B, HER2-enriched, and triple-negative guide management.

In information science and programming, subjenis describes finer divisions within a data type or object category, including subtypes in type systems or discriminated unions, where a subtype inherits from a broader type and adds specific properties.

Etymology and usage: subjenis combines the Indonesian prefix sub- with jenis, meaning type or kind. It is used alongside subspecies, subtipe, or subclass depending on field.
