Støvmider

Støvmider are microscopic arachnids that are commonly found in homes. They are too small to be seen with the naked eye and thrive in warm, humid environments. Dust mites feed on shed human and animal skin cells, which are abundant in bedding, carpets, upholstery, and stuffed toys.

The waste products of dust mites, particularly their fecal pellets, are a common allergen. Inhaling these particles can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and difficulty breathing. For some, these reactions can manifest as asthma exacerbations.

Controlling dust mite populations is a key strategy for managing allergies. This typically involves reducing humidity levels in the home, regularly cleaning and vacuuming with a HEPA filter, washing bedding in hot water, and using dust mite-proof covers for mattresses and pillows. While complete elimination is difficult, these measures can significantly reduce allergen exposure and alleviate symptoms.
