Stummfilmen
Stummfilmen, or silent films, are motion pictures produced without synchronized spoken dialogue or synchronized sound effects. Narration and emotion were conveyed primarily through visual storytelling: actors’ mime and facial expressions, framing, editing, and the use of intertitles (Zwischentitel) to provide dialogue and exposition. Music accompanied screenings, typically performed live by musicians in the theater or added later as a separate soundtrack.
