Strålningsskyddsnivå refers to the established dose limits for exposure to ionizing radiation. The primary goal is to minimize the risk of deterministic effects, which are those with a threshold dose, and to reduce the probability of stochastic effects, such as cancer, which are believed to occur with no threshold dose.

Different radiation protection levels are defined for various groups of people and situations. These typically include occupational exposure limits for workers who handle radioactive materials or work in radiation environments, public exposure limits for the general population, and specific limits for pregnant workers and minors. The dose limits are usually expressed in terms of effective dose, which is a measure of the overall risk to the whole body, taking into account the different sensitivities of various organs and tissues to radiation.

The principles of radiation protection, often summarized as justification, optimization, and limitation, underpin the setting and application of these levels.
