Stroller

A stroller, also known as a pushchair or perambulator in some regions, is a small wheeled conveyance designed to transport infants and young children. It typically features a seat or reclining surface, a frame, wheels, a canopy or sunshade, and a handle for pushing by an adult. Strollers are used from infancy through toddlerhood and are common for daily errands, travel, and outdoor use.

Common components include a harness (often a five-point belt), a folding mechanism for compact storage, brakes on the rear wheels, and a storage basket beneath the seat. Materials vary and may include aluminum or steel frames, plastic shells, and foam or air-filled tires. Some models offer a reversible seat, adjustable recline, or adjustable handlebars.

There are several configurations: umbrella strollers are lightweight and compact; full-size strollers provide more features and sturdier frames; travel systems pair a stroller with an infant car seat; jogger strollers have a fixed wheel in front and padded suspension for running; double and triple strollers accommodate two or three children; lightweight or minimalist strollers emphasize portability.

Safety and usage considerations include adherence to safety standards and recalls; in many regions, strollers must meet consumer safety guidelines, and some models are certified by organizations. Users should properly fasten the harness, check the brakes, ensure the stroller is folded safely when not in use, and observe weight and age limits. Regular inspection of parts such as wheels, brakes, and fabric is advised.

Strollers developed from 19th-century baby carriages and evolved into modern pushchairs in the mid–20th century, driven by mass production and design innovations. Today, consumer safety standards and reputable brands guide construction, testing, and recall processes to protect children during everyday use.
