Stretford

Stretford is a market town and the larger of the two ecclesiastical parishes of the Union of Stretford, within the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Historically in Lancashire, it is situated on the south bank of the River Irwell, approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south-southwest of Manchester city centre. The town is a largely residential and commercial suburb.

The name "Stretford" is derived from Old English, meaning "the ford across the paved road," referring to the Roman road that passed through the area. Evidence of Roman presence has been found, and the ford across the River Irwell was a significant crossing point. Stretford grew significantly during the Industrial Revolution as a dormitory town for the expanding industrial centres of Manchester and Salford. Its proximity to these cities, along with good transport links, facilitated this growth.

The town has a diverse economy, with a mix of retail, services, and some light industry. Stretford has a number of parks and green spaces, including Longford Park, which features an athletics stadium and a large, ornate greenhouse. The Stretford Mall is a central shopping precinct. The town is well-connected by road and public transport, with Stretford Metrolink tram stop providing access to Manchester and surrounding areas. The Old Trafford football stadium, home of Manchester United, is located within the geographical area of Stretford, although it is often associated with Trafford.
