Salford

Salford is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England. It lies immediately west of Manchester across the River Irwell and is part of the wider Manchester urban area. The borough includes districts such as Pendleton, Eccles, Swinton and Ordsall, and has a population of around 260,000.

Historically part of Lancashire, Salford developed rapidly in the Industrial Revolution as mills, shipyards and engineering works grew along the Irwell and the Manchester Ship Canal.

Salford Quays, once a busy port, was redeveloped from the late 20th century. It houses MediaCityUK, the BBC and ITV studios, and cultural venues such as The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North.

The University of Salford is a major higher education institution in the city, with campuses at Peel Park and MediaCityUK. The local economy emphasizes education, health, media and professional services, alongside historical manufacturing activity and ongoing urban redevelopment.

Transport and sport: Salford is served by the Manchester Metrolink tram network and has rail links via Salford Central and nearby stations. The city is home to Salford City FC of the National League and the Salford Red Devils rugby league club, reflecting a diverse local sports culture.
