Eccles is a town within the city of Salford, Greater Manchester, England. Historically in Lancashire, Eccles lies on the northern bank of the River Irwell, two miles west of Salford and three miles west of Manchester. The town is well-known for its Eccles cakes, a sweet pastry. The original Eccles Cake was invented in 1769 by James Birch, a local baker.
