Metrolink

Metrolink is a brand name used by several public transit networks in different regions. The most prominent implementations are Metrolink in Southern California and the Manchester Metrolink in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, both focused on moving large numbers of commuters within metropolitan areas.

Metrolink in Southern California is a regional commuter rail system administered by Metrolink, the Los Angeles-area transportation authority. It began operations in 1992 and serves six counties centered on Los Angeles, with lines extending to Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties. Trains typically use diesel locomotives pulling multiple passenger cars and connect with other rail, bus, and metro services at major hubs such as Union Station. The system is funded by a mix of local, state, and federal sources and operated under contracts with private or contractor operators.

Manchester Metrolink is a large urban light-rail network serving Greater Manchester and surrounding areas. It opened in 1992 and has expanded to numerous lines radiating from central Manchester to towns such as Salford, Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham, and Eccles. The system uses light rail vehicles and runs on a combination of street-running and grade-separated track. It is operated by a private sector operator under contract to Transport for Greater Manchester, with governance by TfGM, and integrates with National Rail services and bus networks.

Other uses of the Metrolink brand exist in different regions, but the two above are the best known. The specifics of routes, rolling stock, and governance vary by country and locality.
