Storknunarþætti

Storknunarþætti is an Icelandic term that translates to "coagulation factor" in English. It refers to any of the proteins found in blood plasma that are essential for the process of blood coagulation, also known as clotting. These factors are a critical component of hemostasis, the body's mechanism for stopping bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, a complex cascade of reactions is triggered, involving these various coagulation factors.

There are numerous coagulation factors, numbered using Roman numerals, such as Factor I (fibrinogen), Factor II (prothrombin), Factor III (tissue factor), and so on, up to Factor XIII. Each factor plays a specific role in the clotting pathway, ultimately leading to the formation of a stable fibrin clot that seals the injured vessel.
