Stoppat

Stoppat is a Swedish term that functions primarily as the perfect or supine participle of the verb stoppa. It has two main senses that align with the two primary meanings of stoppa: to stop or to stuff. In verb phrases, stoppat appears with auxiliary verbs such as har or hade to indicate a completed action, for example, har stoppat eller hade stoppat. In the sense of filling or packing, stoppat describes something that has been stuffed or packed, as in phrases where a container or space has been filled.

Grammatically, stoppat is formed from the verb stoppa and is used in per­fect tense constructions. It is most common in verbal contexts, where it marks completion, such as “han har stoppat pengarna i spargrisen” (he has stuffed/stopped the money in the piggy bank) or “hon har stoppat i sig frukosten” (she has eaten breakfast, lit. stuffed in herself the breakfast). When stoppat functions as part of a main clause, its meaning follows whether the action is stopping an event or stuffing an object.

In Swedish usage, there is a distinction between the verbal participle stoppat and the attributive adjective form stoppad. The latter is generally used to describe a noun’s state, as in en stoppad bil (a car that has been stopped). Stoppat, by contrast, is primarily a verbal form used in perfect tenses or in combination with prepositions when describing actions of stopping or stuffing.

Outside ordinary inflected forms, stoppat does not commonly serve as a standalone noun. The related noun or noun phrase for a stoppage or stuffing would typically be expressed with other phrasing.
