Stoffrolle

Stoffrolle is a German term that translates to “fabric roll” and denotes a bolt or roll of fabric wound around a central core. It is the standard packaging and storage format used in the textile industry and in fabric retail, enabling convenient handling, storage, and transport of textiles before they are cut and used.

A Stoffrolle consists of fabric wound evenly around a cylindrical core made of cardboard, plastic, or metal. The width of the roll, known as the fabric width, is a key specification and is typically expressed in centimeters. For apparel fabrics, common widths range from about 110 to 150 cm, though wider or narrower bolts exist. The length on a roll is measured in running meters and can vary widely from a few meters to several hundred meters, depending on the material, weave or knit, and the intended use. The total weight of a roll depends on fabric type and thickness.

Materials sold on Stoffrollen cover a broad spectrum, including cotton, wool, linen, silk, polyester, viscose, and blends, with various finishes such as prints, dyes, or coatings. In retail and tailoring, fabric is usually sold by the running meter, with price calculated accordingly.
