Stoala

Stoala is a fictional city-state situated on the Leth River in a mid-sized continental setting often described in contemporary fantasy literature. It lies just north of the river's delta and south of the North Ridge, with a population around 40,000. The economy centers on textiles, crafts, and river trade, supported by nearby orchards and timberlands.

The name Stoala derives from an early local term meaning "meeting place by the water," reflecting its role as a crossroads for merchants and travelers. In older scripts it is written as Stoa-la and Stoale.

Stoala traces its origins to a trading outpost established in the 11th century by river merchants. It grew into a walled town during the medieval era and, after several autonomy movements, developed a municipal government in the 19th century. It maintained a degree of self-rule through regional conflicts.

The city sits on a floodplain along the Leth, with wooded hills to the east. Its temperate climate features four distinct seasons, with fertile soils enabling orchards and vineyards around the urban core.

Stoala functions as a constitutional republic with an elected City Council and a Mayor. The economy emphasizes textiles, woodcraft, and logistics from river shipping, alongside agriculture and a growing service sector driven by the historic center and market district.

The cityscape includes arcaded streets, timber-framed houses, and a stone guildhall. Notable landmarks include the Old Market, the Gate of Leth, and a riverside promenade. The annual Stoala Market festival showcases crafts, music, and local cuisine.
