Stipulaceus

Stipulaceus is a term used in botany to describe the presence of stipules, which are small, leaf-like appendages typically found at the base of a leaf stalk (petiole). These structures can vary greatly in size, shape, and persistence, from tiny, ephemeral scales to prominent, leathery structures. Stipules are often paired, with one on each side of the petiole, though in some species they may be fused or absent.

The function of stipules is not fully understood, but several hypotheses exist. They may serve to protect the young, developing leaf or bud, acting as a shield against mechanical damage or desiccation. In some cases, stipules may be photosynthetic, contributing to the plant's energy production, or they might be involved in defense against herbivores by providing a habitat for ant colonies or by secreting defensive compounds.

Different plant families and genera exhibit distinct patterns of stipule development. For instance, the family Fabaceae (legumes) is known for its well-developed stipules, which can be quite diverse. Conversely, many species in the Asteraceae family (daisies) lack stipules entirely. The term stipulaceus itself, derived from the Latin word "stipula" meaning straw or stalk, directly refers to this characteristic feature of botanical structures.
