Stilregister is a term used in linguistics and stylistics to denote a coherent set of linguistic choices that a speaker or writer selects to suit a particular social context. It encompasses level of formality, technicality, tone, and stance, and it governs decisions in vocabulary, syntax, pronoun use, and rhetorical devices. Stilregister arises from the interaction of communicative function, audience, and channel, and it helps explain why texts vary across genres and situations.

Common registers include high-formality (such as official letters, legal documents, or academic prose), neutral or standard style, and informal or colloquial language.
