Steroidogenes
Steroidogenes is the biological process of synthesizing steroid compounds from precursors such as cholesterol, a term sometimes used interchangeably with steroidogenesis. The word combines steroid with a suffix meaning origin or production. In most scientific usage, the more common term is steroidogenesis, but steroidogenes appears in some literature as a descriptor of the ability of cells or tissues to produce steroids.
In animals, steroidogenesis occurs mainly in the adrenal cortex, gonads, and liver, and to a lesser extent
Key features of steroidogenes include compartmentalization within cells (mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum in animals), tight
Clinical relevance includes the potential consequences of pathway disruptions, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypogonadism, or
