This fundamental structure consists of seventeen carbon atoms arranged into four fused rings: three cyclohexane rings and one cyclopentane ring. This arrangement, often referred to as the gonane or sterane skeleton, is conserved across a vast array of biologically important compounds.

The diversity of steroid molecules arises from variations in functional groups attached to this core structure, as well as differences in the stereochemistry of these attachments.
