Sternkataloge, also known as star catalogs, are systematic listings of stars designed to provide precise positional and sometimes additional data about these celestial objects. These catalogs serve as fundamental references in astronomy for navigation, research, and observational planning.

Historically, the earliest star catalogs date back to ancient civilizations, such as the work of Hipparchus in Greece around 150 BC, who compiled one of the first known comprehensive star catalogs. This tradition continued through the centuries, culminating in major efforts like the Bayer catalog (1603), which assigned Greek letters to stars within constellations, and the Flamsteed catalog (1712), which used numerical designations.

Modern star catalogs are increasingly accurate and extensive, employing advanced technology such as photographic plates and CCDs. Notable contemporary catalogs include the Henry Draper Catalogue, which provided spectral classifications for over 225,000 stars, and the Hipparcos Catalogue, resulting from ESA's Hipparcos satellite mission, which measured stellar positions, parallaxes, and proper motions with unprecedented precision.

More recent projects like the Gaia mission further revolutionize star cataloging by mapping over a billion stars with high precision, providing invaluable data for a wide array of astrophysical research.
