They are characterized by an engine mounted inside the hull, with a drive unit that extends through the transom and into the water. This drive unit, known as the sterndrive or outdrive, houses the propeller and can be articulated for steering and trim.

The primary advantage of sterndrive propulsion lies in its blend of inboard engine power and outboard maneuverability. The engine is typically an automotive-derived gasoline or diesel engine, offering a good balance of performance and cost-effectiveness. The sterndrive unit itself provides excellent steering control, similar to an outboard motor, and can be tilted out of the water for maintenance or when the boat is not in use, reducing corrosion and drag. This tilt-up capability also aids in trailering.

They are a common choice for watersports like waterskiing and wakeboarding due to the propeller being situated beneath the boat, which can reduce the risk of injury compared to some outboard configurations.
