For people, sterilisation is usually achieved by surgical methods such as tubal ligation for individuals with a female reproductive system and vasectomy for those with a male reproductive system. Non-surgical approaches exist but are less common and their permanence and effectiveness can vary. Sterilisation is generally considered irreversible, though some procedures are marketed with reversibility claims, which may not be guaranteed. Counseling and informed consent are standard, and discussions about fertility preservation may be appropriate in certain cases.

In equipment and product contexts, sterilisation methods include steam under pressure (autoclaving), dry heat, chemical sterilants such as ethylene oxide, hydrogen peroxide plasma, filtration for heat-sensitive liquids, and irradiation. Validation and routine monitoring, including biological indicators, are used to confirm sterility before use or distribution.

Ethical, legal, and social dimensions accompany sterilisation. Debates focus on autonomy, consent, potential coercion, and fair access, with attention to how decisions are made for different genders, ages, or vulnerable groups. Legal requirements vary by jurisdiction, often regulating informed consent, minimum age, and the provision of counseling. Historically, sterilisation has been misused in coercive programs, which has shaped contemporary safeguards and emphasizes voluntary, informed, and well-documented decision-making.
