Stereoskooppisessa, meaning stereoscopic in Finnish, refers to a technique for creating or enhancing the perception of depth in an image or video. This is typically achieved by presenting slightly different images to each eye, mimicking how our natural binocular vision works. Our brains then fuse these two images together, inferring depth and creating a three-dimensional effect.

The most common method for stereoscopic display involves presenting two images side-by-side or interlaced, which are then viewed through special glasses. These glasses might be passive, using polarized lenses to separate the images, or active, employing shutters that synchronize with the display to show the correct image to each eye. Another approach is autostereoscopy, which allows for 3D viewing without glasses, often using lenticular lenses or parallax barriers integrated into the display.

Stereoscopic imagery has applications in various fields, including entertainment (3D movies and video games), scientific visualization, microscopy, and virtual reality. The goal is to provide a more immersive and realistic viewing experience by simulating the depth perception of the real world. The effectiveness of stereoscopic presentation can depend on factors such as the quality of the images, the viewing distance, and individual viewer perception.
