Stepdecks

A stepdeck trailer, also known as a drop deck trailer, is a type of heavy-haul semi-trailer that features a two-level deck. The lower deck is significantly lower than the main deck, creating a step in the trailer's structure. This design is crucial for transporting oversized or unusually tall loads that would exceed legal height limits on a standard flatbed trailer.

The primary advantage of a stepdeck trailer is its ability to reduce the overall height of the cargo. By placing the load on the lower deck, the distance between the ground and the top of the cargo is minimized. This often allows for the transport of equipment and machinery that would otherwise require special permits or be impossible to move legally.

Stepdeck trailers come in various configurations, including single drop, double drop, and stretch versions, each offering different loading heights and capacities. The transition from the upper deck to the lower deck, known as the "well," is typically a few feet long. Loading and unloading is usually done via ramps that attach to the rear of the lower deck.

These trailers are commonly used in industries such as construction, heavy equipment manufacturing, and oil and gas. They are essential for moving items like excavators, bulldozers, industrial generators, and other large machinery.
