Stemmetones

Stemmetones is a theoretical term in linguistics describing a class of tonal properties associated with the lexical stem of a word in certain tonal languages. The proposal envisions a stem-bound pitch pattern that remains linked to the stem across inflection and derivation, influencing the tonal shape of related forms. In autosegmental representations, the stemmetone would be encoded on a stem tier and may interact with affixal tones through tone sandhi or tonal spreading. The term is used primarily in discussions of word-internal tone structure rather than as an established category with broad empirical support.

Supporters argue that stemmetones help explain why related word forms share core pitch configurations even when affixes carry their own tones. They may also account for stable tone contrasts within word families or across derivational families where the stem dominates phonological behavior. Critics, however, note that the idea overlaps with existing concepts such as lexical tones, stem morphemes, or tone-bearing morphemes, and that evidence for a distinct stem-level tone is limited and often circular.

As of now, stemmetones are not widely adopted in typology or description and are primarily found in theoretical discussions and speculative work.
