SteinbachHallenberg

Steinbach-Hallenberg is a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, in Thuringia, Germany. It is located in the Thuringian Forest, approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Schmalkalden and 18 kilometers northwest of Meiningen. The town was formed in 2007 through the merger of the former municipalities of Steinbach-Hallenberg, Bernshausen, Oberschönau, and Unterschönau.

The history of the area is closely linked to mining and the production of metal goods. Hallenberg Castle, a ruin located above the town, dates back to the 12th century and played a significant role in the region's defense. Steinbach-Hallenberg has a long tradition in the cutlery and tool manufacturing industry, with some companies tracing their origins back several centuries. This industrial heritage is still visible in the town's economic structure.

The town lies in a scenic valley surrounded by wooded hills, making it a popular destination for hiking and outdoor activities. Several hiking trails, including parts of the Rennsteig, a famous ridge trail, pass through or near Steinbach-Hallenberg. The town itself offers recreational facilities and a glimpse into traditional Thuringian life. Its administrative center is located in the Steinbach part of the town.
